Larchmont Fireworks Barge Fire
The fantastic fireworks on view in Larchmont Harbor seemed short when they ended abruptly and without finale or fanfare. Some muted boos could be heard among the crowd, and many wondered aloud about the effect of budget cuts. Some left, and others turned there attention to the myriad of other fireworks displays around the Long Island Sound. After a few minutes, the fireworks started again, but something did not seem right about the continuation of the show. The fireworks were traveling progressively shorter distances from the barge before they seemed to be detonating without leaving the barge, sending streams of fire in and around the barge and its tug. It was clear that this display was not planned, but was the menacing and dangerous whimsy of the fire raging aboard the barge. A closer look revealed the heroic efforts of the barge and tug operators spraying water onto the barge from from a perch on the decks of the tug to bring the fire under control within a few minutes.Read More
